The Maya also made significant advancements in mathematics, astronomy, and calendar-making. The Maya calendar was highly sophisticated and was based on a 365-day solar year and a 260-day sacred year. The Maya were also skilled engineers and farmers and developed an elaborate system of canals and terraces to manage water and cultivate crops in the challenging tropical environment, in addition to their architectural and scientific achievements, the Maya are also known for their art and writing. The Maya developed a complex hieroglyphic writing system that was used to record history, genealogy, and religious texts.
